Convention Report for Anime LA 2006
written
by Master Jedi
The
second Annual Anime LA turned out to be, in my opinion a
bigger and a better convention than last year. With over
1000 registered fans, there was plenty of action to go
around. Just as last year, the convention was located at
the Airtel Plaza Hotel, which was conveniently at the same
places as the con. This was filled with several room
parties and a simple way for the tired cosplayer to go get
some seep in their rooms.
As with
every convention there were some positive and negative
points.
Some of
the positive points included, More convention room space
at the hotel, The Opening Ceremonies, con suite suite, a
place for registered fans to get snacks or drinks, The
costume repair shop, dealer room, video game room with
multiple systems, a 24 hour video anime room, a rum party
with pirate auction, a AMV contest, all night Karaoke on
Sat., a dance and of course panels. A schedule of all the
events, gatherings and locations was conveniently printed
out by the convention, which really helped the fans find
what they were looking for. The hotel staff and
environment were very friendly, in our opinion, better
than last year. We were able to set up a photo studio in
the hotel, the settings and environments were beautiful,
great for photo shoots – one of the best locations for
photos in our opinion and from what we’ve heard. As
small as the location was we were able to take over 1000
pictures, of which about 300 were studio pics.
Some of
the negative points regarding the convention included, a
“unorganized Rum Party” –the times of the dance
coincided with the times of the Rum party, meaning there
was dancing and music going on when there should have been
a Rum party. The DJ did not want to play pirate music for
the Rum party event. The organizers of the convention
could not figure out where to put the photographers for
the masquerade. The dealer room was larger than last year,
but still very few dealers. The judging for the masquerade
took a long time, about 3 hours and many people didn’t
bother to wait it out. There were a lot of people running
around in the hallways late at night / early morning, and
the hotel was right next to a airport – loud airplanes
would wake people up whenever.
Overall
the Convention was a great success; the hotel was an
excellent location to host the convention, the staffs for
both the hotel and the convention were both nice and
friendly. These points made Anime Los Angeles 2006 a great
way to start of the New Year.
